Food Waste is a Scandal..

Hey All,

Today i would love to draw your attention towards the food wastage in our daily lives. We waste an immense amount of food in our daily life, unknowing the fact that food waste is a scandal (as specified in a TED video). According to this video western countries waste half of there food in an average, not because it is inedible, its because it is not appealing.

Every year, the average person produces nearly 475 pounds of food waste. That adds up to a whopping 70+ million tons, making it the third largest component by weight in our landfills.

Not only does this waste attract vermin, it emits odors and liquids that are toxic to the environment. The methane gas generated from food waste is 20 to 25 times more potent than CO2.

According to Hinduism, food is a gift from God and should be treated with great respect. Devout Hindus offer food to God before eating and are careful about what and how they eat.

Food plays an important role in Hindu worship. According to the Vedya, all food should be offered to God before it is eaten, and food offered to God is considered to bestow religious merit, purifying body, mind and spirit.

I recently encountered an incidence right at my home, We as a Hindu family have a ritual of ‘Shradh’ , performed in respect of our Late Ancestors. According to the ritual we have to call a brahmin and feed him, (Brahmins are the most sacred caste in Hindus). We served him gracefully, and he also had a good appetite “tongue out”. What i see after he completes his eating, he had left food in the plate (‘juthan’). But as i am taught by my parents, i don’t have to speak in front of elders. So we greeted him with some gifts and he left.

This incidence left a mark in my mind that why to give food to this people who  don’t respect food. There are many people around you who sleep without having there food in night. Cm-on guys, we are an educated generation  respect food not because of Hindu mythology says, not because its just a good habit, but because it pollutes our environment and just a little care for the people who doesn’t get proper food.

In the end, i will also request you all to give food to the needy, instead of giving them money. (I will mention this again “NEEDY”, not poor).
